Creating Color Washes

Color Washes are a wonderful way to add subtle color by layering two (or more) colors when using Chalk Paint®. You can also use a Color Wash to create a limed effect  - perfect for furniture or a floor - where you want the grain of the wood to show through the paint.  I use these techniques often and would love to show you how.

To learn how to create Color Washes, please visit my new blog: Paintbrush and Pearls.

French Ticking

Ticking is a cotton or linen textile, tightly woven for durability.

It was traditionally used for bedding, mattress covers and bed
pillows. It commonly has a striped design, in muted colors like blue, brown, or grey against a plain, neutral background.
Today however, it has found many other uses including upholstering furniture...even curtains.

It can be found in a myriad of colors - and never goes out of style.

We have a large selection of French and Belgian made Annie Sloan ticking fabric that coordinates with Chalk Paint® colors. I have a project in mind  - stop by the shop to see my latest!

Little Bit....

Sometimes a little bit of Chalk Paint® can go a long way!

If you just need a small amount of paint for your project or just want to test out the colors, then you will be pleased to know that we now carry Chalk Paint® Sample Pots!

Our 4 oz. "minis" are available in all the 30 beautiful colors of the regular quart size.

So now is the time to test out all of those color combinations you have been wanting to try!

I'll be testing a few myself in preparation for our next Chalk Paint® Class in Richmond on Wednesday, March 20. If you haven't signed up, please call the shop at DéCOR at 804-562-8326.

Want some hands-on experience with Chalk Paint®? Then sign up for our next Chalk Paint® Workshop in Irvington on Thursday, March 21. I will show you have to create four finishes on sample boards, how to wax with both clear and dark wax, the secret to buffing to create a fabulous patina as well as answer your questions about painting. Classes are kept small, so you will receive individual attention!

Introducing Annie Sloan Fabrics

New for Spring at Brocante Home is a collection, just introduced by Annie Sloan, of fabric directly from France and Belgium.

The cotton, ticking and floral fabrics coordinate beautifully with Annie's Chalk Paint® palette and each other. All are suitable for upholstery, pillows and curtains. In keeping with the French tradition, some of the fabrics even come in double widths (110 inches) - perfect for duvet covers, headboards or even wall coverings.

Toiles:

This fabric was first printed on "toile", a light canvas like fabric in the late 18th century, in a town near Paris called Jouy. Frequently used in the French Royal Court at Versailles, toiles always depict pastoral scenes.

Normandie: The toile depicts delightful country scenes in a warm sepia on a light dusty greyed lilac. It comes in double width.

Charcoal Pastoral: An elegant fabric printed in a charcoal graphite color on an off white pure fine cotton. The pictures of idyllic country scenes are drawn beautifully and finely. It is also in the double width.

Tickings:

A tightly woven, cotton fabric originally used for mattress covers.

Paris Noir: A black cotton woven with a putty colored background to soften the black.

Monaco:  One of our most popular ticking fabrics as it has a lot of colors yet it is not bright or over powering so it works with just about everything. The colours are light denim blue, pale blue, chestnut brown, white, wine red, oatmeal, grey and pale sage green.

Panama Rouge: A horizontal stripe in off white and tomato red in different intensities. Being double width the fabric could be hung so the stripes are vertical.

Gigi: A fabulous stripe of reds, pinks and greens.

Floral & Decorative:

Faded Roses: A beautiful old print that look fabulous with Old White.

French Hens: A fun and lively fabric that looks perfect with some of Annie's more sophisticated and  intense colors such as Arles and Emperors Silk. It is an old design and comes straight from a French factory.

Come see the new fabrics at both our shops.
